about

This album contains three works performed / recorded / assembled by myself. These works stretch over a period from 2016 to 2021.

"mired" (2020-21) is for five voices and visual media. This piece takes its form from Western popular music by way of utilizing the verse-chorus-bridge structure. It hides in plain sight the fact that it is a song but with no words, just the sounds of breath and fricatives, the remainders of meanings. "mired" uses jagged lines and repetition to define itself. It is part 1 of 5 from a collection known as "A knife at all times", the totality of which is forthcoming. The video can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS6NqRh9dt4

"Ten Compulsory Figures" (2020) is a series of miniatures for solo guitar. These pieces (almost studies) are investigations into how the guitar is played. Each work attempts to look at guitar performance practice and technique in a different way with an emphasis on how the performer's physicality impacts the resulting sound. This piece was initially premiered via my Instagram in short performance videos. Each miniature was written after the previous one was premiered allowing the successor to be influenced by the earlier material.

"(our homes are not the kinds of places you could own)" (2016) is a lengthy electronic piece which completely overshadows the scope of the other two pieces on the album. This work is an atmospheric tape loop experiment; like enlarged polyrhythms, the materials repeat, collide, and sync with each other. This piece only ever had one partial live presentation where it ended up being used as "tear down music" as a pair of artists were taking down their sculpture.

The title of this album not only invokes the first track's name; "admired" seems to be looking at something positively but at arms length. There is a distance, a space there. I think this space highlights the commonality between the three pieces here: they all deal with space, be it physically or linearly (large or small in both cases). The tense of the title also puts these recordings in the past: something finalized.
